Updated · By the WanderWise editorial team

What 5,000 points realistically does

5,000 points is still short of any typical award night; it is one-third of the 15,000-point bottom of our measured select-service range. Before Marriott dropped its award chart in 2022, 5,000 points was the off-peak price of a Category 1 hotel, which is why older articles say 5,000 points books a night — that chart no longer governs anything. Today, the clearest use is a certificate top-off: 5,000 points turns a 35,000-point certificate into a 40,000-point night.

Nights 5,000 points can cover

Marriott has priced award nights dynamically since its award chart ended on March 29, 2022, so there is no fixed price per hotel. These are the points-per-night ranges we measure by property type; the night counts include Marriott's Stay for 5, Pay for 4 benefit and assume a similar price each night.

The Points Guy has reported nights of up to 150,000 points at Marriott's most aspirational luxury hotels — above the luxury range shown here. Before you book, divide the cash rate by the points price: above about 0.9¢ per point is a good redemption, below about 0.7¢ means paying cash is usually better.

Using 5,000 points with a free night certificate

Since March 12, 2026, Marriott lets you add up to 25,000 points to a free night certificate (up from 15,000). Adding your 5,000 points stretches each certificate this far:

Transferring 5,000 points to airline miles

5,000 points transfer to about 1,666 airline miles at Marriott's 3:1 ratio. The 5,000-mile transfer bonus only starts at 60,000 points, so a transfer at this size gets the plain ratio. That only beats a hotel redemption when you have already found a specific award flight.

Our recommendation for 5,000 points

Keep earning toward a real redemption, and keep the account active. If you hold a free night certificate, put these points toward a top-off at a better hotel than the certificate reaches alone.

Frequently asked questions

How much are 5,000 Marriott points worth?

5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points are worth about $35–$45 on hotel stays, at 0.7 to 0.9 cents per point (The Points Guy values Marriott points at 0.75 cents as of September 2026). Redeemed for gift cards they are worth only about $20–$25.

How many free nights can I get with 5,000 Marriott points?

None on their own. The cheapest select-service nights we measure start around 15,000 points, and Marriott has had no award chart since 2022. 5,000 points can still be added to a free night certificate (up to 25,000 points per certificate) to reach a more expensive hotel.

Is 5,000 Marriott points enough for a free night?

Generally no. Marriott has priced award nights dynamically since 2022, and the cheapest select-service nights we measure start around 15,000 points. The old award chart priced Category 1 hotels at 5,000 points off-peak, but that chart was retired on March 29, 2022. Today 5,000 points are worth about $35 to $45 toward a stay, or can top off a free night certificate.

Can I transfer 5,000 Marriott points to airline miles?

5,000 points transfer to about 1,666 airline miles at Marriott's 3:1 ratio. The 5,000-mile transfer bonus only starts at 60,000 points, so a transfer at this size gets the plain ratio. That is usually worth it only when you have already found a specific award flight that needs the miles.
